Vice Chairperson, Jill McCrory at LGBT White House reception.

Washington, DC - June 22, 2010 - AWAB Acting Director of Community Outreach, Chris Boisvert, and council member, Rev. Jill McCrory attended an LGBT Pride month reception at the White House hosted by President Obama.

The invitation was made to a variety of LGBT rights organization leaders from around the nation. Many people were from state, regional or local organizations, such as Equality Florida and PFLAG Minneapolis. President Obama addressed the gathering and talked of the work to repeal don't ask don't tell, how the Department of Health and Human Services was issuing instructions that any hospital that accepted Medicare would be requited to provide visitation to LGBT families. The President also talked about his hope that ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act) would be passed.  The White House kicked off the month with a proclamation:

As Americans, it is our birthright that all people are created equal and deserve the same rights, privileges, and opportunities.  Since our earliest days of independence, our Nation has striven to fulfill that promise.  An important chapter in our great, unfinished story is the movement for fairness and equality on behalf of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.  This month, as we recognize the immeasurable contributions of LGBT Americans, we renew our commitment to the struggle for equal rights for LGBT Americans and to ending prejudice and injustice wherever it exists.

In the areas of health and security, the Obama administration listed its accomplishments which include the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act, the Ryan White CARE Act for people living with HIV/AIDS—including the elimination of the ban on HIV/AIDS entry into the United States.  accomplish that goal. - story continued

AWAB and Human Rights Celebrate the Role of Baptists
in Attaining Marriage Equality in Washington, DC

Washington, DC - April 9, 2010 - AWAB, the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, along with the Human Rights Campaign joined together with a host of Baptist and ecumenical partners to celebrate the prophetic witness of Baptists in the struggle for marriage equality in Washington, DC.  The Rev. Dr. Amy Butler of Calvary Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Dennis Wiley and Rev. Dr. Christine Wiley of Covenant Baptist Church were each honored at a reception at the Washington, DC, headquarters of the HRC.

AWAB Board Chair, Robin Lunn, and Harry Knox, HRC Director, Religion and Faith Program, presented Rev. Butler and the Rev. Wileys with certificates recognizing their work for marriage equality.  Each of the honorees spoke of how their faith lead them to this struggle and how important it was for their congregations that they be involved. Lunn noted, “We know that the voices of people of faith play a key role in these legislative processes.  But the role of Baptists is unique in that we are too often seen only as conservative.  Welcoming and Affirming Baptists are a clear progressive voice in contrast to so much hate speech.  AWAB seeks to honor all Baptists who are willing to create another place where LGBT persons can be fully included in all aspects of religious life, including marriage.  To do so publicly is to proclaim the radical welcome of God in the historic Baptist tradition.” - story continued

Upcoming Building and Inclusive Church Trainings

AWAB is a partner in the National Field Organizer grant based project to build more inclusive congregations. A key focus of the program is holding trainings for people in congregations that are ready to take the steps of becoming welcoming and affirming and for people who are in churches that are not yet at the beginning of the process but wish to engage in the conversation. Rev. Wes Jamison is the National Field Organizer. You can learn more about the training and upcoming schedule here.

Join AWAB at Camp in the Summer of 2010

AWAB is inviting you to participate in Baptist Peace Camp and to attend the Alliance of Baptists Convocation and Retreat this summer. Both groups are LGBT affirming and AWAB has an active relationship with both. This is a time to join together with fellow progressive Baptists in a time of celebration and exploring what it means to be people of faith. More information can be found at the websites of the Alliance and the Baptists Peace Fellowship of North America. A flyer is also here.

Who We Are

The Association of Welcoming & Affirming Baptists (AWAB) is an organization of churches willing to go on record as welcoming and affirming all persons without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity, and who have joined together to advocate for the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons within Baptist communities of faith. We are also made up of group and individual Friends of AWAB who seek to join with us in broadening the welcome to all. Our unique makeup helps make AWAB The National Voice for LGBT Baptists.

Vision Statement of the Association of Welcoming & Affirming Baptists

We envision that the day may speedily come within Baptist Churches when no one shall feel excluded from God's love in Jesus Christ because of their sexual orientation and gender identity.
